Hey All You Crazy Women!
I hope all of your Thanksgiving Holidays were joyous! I had wonderful family for our festivities and it was nice to reconnect. On Sunday all of our company was gone, so I sent the kiddos with my husband to see the new Harry Potter movie and I had the house to myself. Though cleaning was desperately in need, I decided to go in my craft room and play with my supplies!
I have a friend in Houston (who is also an extremely talented and creative stamper, as well as, in my downline) that would make a beautiful paint can each year for our annual ornament exchange. Every year, everyone, would fight over who was going to get Jennifer's paint can. Though her ornament (inside the paint can) was always nice, we all wanted the beautiful container it came in. So, I always think of Jenn when I decide to make a paint can.
Here is the finished product:
Now, I will tell you how to make it!
Start with cutting the background piece to cover the paint can.
FYI---the cheapest place to get the empty paint cans is at your local hardware store!!
You will need two pieces 7 inches by 11 inches. I used the Stampin' Up Specialty Designer Series Paper Candy Cane Christmas (#120809) from the Holiday Mini
Then you will cut the holes to go around the handles (if the picture is too small, click on it and it will get bigger) Measure down from the top of the paper and draw a dot on the backside. Using a Stampin' Up Circle Punch 1" (119868), place that dot in the center of your cutting area and punch out half a circle on each side of your paper. Do that on both pieces.
Now, turn your paper over to the backside of your paper and using Stampin' Up Sticky Strip (#104294) apply it to the edges of the paper.
The Sticky Strip is the only adhesive I have found to work well on the paint cans---SUPER STICKY!
Now you are ready to adhere your background paper to your paint can. You will notice that my paper does not go from edge to edge. I like to add a little bit of ribbon around the top and bottom of my can and find the ribbon adheres better to the can than to the paper. If you want your paper to go from top to bottom, just change your dimensions to 7 1/2 inches by 11 inches and change your dot to 1 1/2 inches. Easy Peasy!
Be careful when you are sticking your paper on---you don't have many chances with the Sticky Strip so make sure you are centered before pressing it down.
Next, I started to create my center piece for my paint can. Using my Stampin' Up SizzixBigz XL Die Flower Folds (#115970), I cut out my flower layers using my Candy Cane Christmas Paper and Riding Hood Red (#111348), as an accent. I then ran the flowers dies in the Riding Hood Red back through my Big Shot using the Stampin' Up Embossing Folder Petals-a-Plenty (#116824) .
As an aside, if you don't have the Bigz XL Die Flower Folds, you need to get it! I use this die all the time---cards, bags, scrapbook pages, etc---it is so fun and so versatile!
Back to the flowers---I added some of the Stampin' Up Jewels Basic Rhinestones (119246) to give it some 'bling' and then used a button from the Stampin' Up Designer Buttons 'Regal' (#119744) in the middle.
Then I added the middle strip to my paint can using Stampin' Up Designer Fabric Candy Cane Christmas (#121715). You could just use a strip of paper, but I thought the fabric added a nice texture touch and kind of looks like ribbon.
Then I used Stampin' Up Whisper White Taffeta Ribbon (#109070) to even out the edges. The best thing to use to adhere the fabric and ribbon is the Stampin' Up Mini Glue Dots (#103683)---they are small, but super sticky. Another FYI, try to have your ends over lap in the middle where you are going to put your flower---it hides them nicely!
Now adhere your flower.
The one thing that Jennifer ALWAYS did for her paint cans was to add a paint can opener. These are cute little devices that make the job of opening your can a snap. They are dirt cheap at the local hardware store!
As a crafter, though, we must decorate and make it pretty!
I just followed the steps above and made a smaller flower and backed it in a solid color flower---cute, huh???
For some final touches, I cut some strips from my Designer Fabric and tied it to the handle of the paint can. I added some ribbon to the top and bottom edges and added some extra buttons on either side of the flower. I cut a circle of paper from the Candy Cane Christmas Designer Paper using my Circle Scissors Plus (#112530) and adhered it to my paint can lid. I tied my opener to the handle and VIOLA! a fun and cute container for a GREAT Christmas gift!
