As many of you know, my first passion is scrapbooking. That I could actually use my products to make cards and projects, is just a bonus. I have been scrapbooking since 1987 when I did my first scrapbook for my pledge year as in Alpha Phi Sorority at East Carolina University (wow---that was a long time ago)! Times have changed and so have scrapbooking products! I have been a demonstrator with Stampin' Up since 2002 and have loved every minute of it. Stampin' Up makes the highest quality of products and the versatility is unsurpassed.
I recently acquired all of the family photos from my mom and am challenging myself to scrapbook all of them for my parents, brother, sister and myself. Quite a large task, but equal parts fun! I am trying to simplify the process and do cute but easy pages. Truly the most important thing about scrapbooking is your pictures and your journaling. The embellishments should be secondary and subdued (in my opinion)! The focus should be on the subjects in the pictures. So, I thought I would chronicle my journey on completing these albums, share some of my ideas, give you some tips and hopefully help another scrapper in the same process. The thing I hear repeated over and over from would-be crafters, is they do not know where to begin. They would love to start a scrapbook, but are too intimidated or lack the spark to just get started. I am here to say that you all are making it too complicated. Even if you just took some cardstock, stuck your pictures down and journaled the 'who, where and why', you would be better off then a big mess of photos stuck in a box.
So, get a theme---a baby album, your wedding, your travels, your favorite pet, your almost graduating senior's pictures from birth until now and let's get started. Feel free to copy exactly what I have for my pictures---why reinvent the wheel. Feel free to take portions of a page that you like and make it your own. Feel free to take a the concept of a page and change the colors or embellishments and suit it to the theme of your pictures! Feel free to look at my pages and say 'I could do better than that' and challenge yourself! Whatever gets you started and works for you. No more excuses!
First off your will need an area to work on your pages. I am very fortunate to have a room totally devoted to my scrapbooking/rubber stamping passion. If you don't have a separate room, claim a small area of the house or a desk that you can leave supplies and pages you are working on out!
This is my area:
I love my desk. I got it at an auction for $7.00. The best purchase I ever made. It isn't pretty to look at, but it has a fantastic work area and I just love it! The desk holds everything that I need to get to quickly. I keep all of my stamp pad colors within easy reach and my SU ribbons as well. My craft room has great natural light, but I have a wonderful Ott Light for cloudy days and night time working. Really consider investing in an Ott Light (check Michaels and Hobby Lobby with their 40% off coupons). The Ott Light gives you the most natural light and gives you true colors!
The basic supplies any scrapbooker needs to begin:
You really need a good 12 inch cutter. This one is from SU several years back. The current one is a little bit different, but can be found on page 189 of the current catalog. Go ahead and invest in some extra blades---you will want nice clean edges. I also feel that having two pairs of really sharp scissors is a must. I consider these scissors my 'paper only' ones and they have stayed sharp for over 3 years and a LOT of cutting! The smaller pair works great for very fine or detailed cutting (they are both found on page 189 of the current catalog) I can not scrapbook or rubber stamp without my color wheel. The BEST thing about Stampin' Up, is that all of their ink, cardstock, designer paper, and ribbon match. The color wheel helps you put together the very best color combinations to enhance your pictures (the color wheel is found on page 153 of the catalog). You will also need some sort of adhesive. The basic adhesive that I use is called SNAIL adhesive and is found on page 191 of the catalog. Adhesive is a personal preference, but I have been using SU adhesive for 7 years and it still works great!
The only other supply I would highly suggest because it will keep you organized and your pages protected while you work is a 12 inch craft keeper.
You can gets these at Michael's, Hobby Lobby or Joann's. The are normally around $9.00 but I load up when they go on sale for $4.00. I keep my pictures as I am working in one and my completed pages in another.
So, see, you don't need a lot of supplies to get started. I think one of the biggest mistake that beginners make is to load up on paper, or stickers, or embellishments or products without a plan. You keep accumulating supplies and you never get anything done. So, I am going to begin my pages---follow along if you would like. I am going to make a special tab on the right side of my blog that will organize my entries just for my scrapbook in case you miss any of my pages or would like to refer back. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions at rubberforme@gmail.com If you would like to purchase any of the products, visit my SU website at www.nancyhendel.stampinup.net
